Before Florida Had Lawns: What the Landscape Looked Like Around America’s Founding
Every Fourth of July, Florida is usually framed through familiar summer imagery: flags, cookouts, waterfront views, palms, fireworks, and lawns green enough to survive the rainy season.
That was not Florida in 1776.
When the Declaration of Independence was signed, Florida was still British territory. It was not one of the thirteen colonies joining the rebellion. St. Augustine was the capital of British East Florida, and the peninsula beyond its small settlements was a difficult, water-dominated place of marshes, pine flatwoods, rivers, hardwood hammocks, coastal scrub, and long stretches of land that could become difficult or impassable with the season.1
There were no subdivisions, irrigation controllers, sod farms, homeowners associations, or tropical landscape packages. There were also no neat dividing lines between a “natural” landscape and a built one. The ground itself determined where people could live, grow food, move through the landscape, find water, build shelter, and make it through the wet season.
That does not mean Florida was an untouched wilderness. It was already an old, inhabited, and heavily understood place. Indigenous communities had spent generations learning its soils, plants, waters, fire cycles, and seasonal rhythms. Spanish Florida had added gardens, orchards, missions, livestock, and new crops. British East Florida brought another layer of commercial ambition. By 1776, Florida was not waiting to be discovered. It was being read, used, and contested by people who understood that the outdoor environment was not scenery. It was the system that made life possible.
Before Lawns, the Site Came First
A lawn is an assertion of control. It smooths over differences in soil, moisture, elevation, and plant community. It says that this ground will look and behave the same from one edge of the lot to the other.
Eighteenth-century Florida did not allow that kind of thinking. A few feet of elevation could separate ground that stayed usable from ground that held water. A short walk could take someone from sand to rich organic soil, from open pine land to wet marsh, or from dry ground to a place that changed completely after summer rain. People did not begin with a preferred aesthetic and force the land to comply. They began by asking what the land could do.
That is why hammocks mattered. In Florida, a hammock is not a suspended chair. It is a hardwood-and-palm community that often occupies ground higher or better drained than the land around it, with richer organic soil and a distinct canopy. A hammock might include live oak, magnolia, cabbage palm, red bay, gumbo limbo, or other trees depending on where it occurs in the state. It was not automatically dry, and it was not automatically a settlement site, but it offered a different set of conditions than adjacent pine flatwoods, marsh, or scrub.2
That difference mattered. A hammock could provide shade, timber, wildlife, better soil, wind protection, and a more favorable location for a home site or garden. John Bartram, traveling through East Florida in 1765 and 1766, repeatedly noticed the transitions between swamp, palmetto ground, pine land, hammock, spring, and shell-rich bluffs. His journal is compelling because he was not simply cataloging scenery. He was documenting the practical logic of the place: where the ground changed, where water moved, and where a person could reasonably stop, plant, or travel.3
Water carried the same importance. Rivers, creeks, marshes, springs, and estuaries were food sources and travel corridors, but they were also constraints. Modern Florida still reflects that reality. A pond is now a view. A canal is behind a house. A swale is where grass grows poorly. A drainage easement is the strip of land homeowners wish was not on their survey. The language has changed, but the problem has not: water is going somewhere, and the site eventually exposes every decision made about it.
Plants Had Jobs
Most modern planting decisions begin with appearance, screening, maintenance, flowering, shade, or wildlife value. Those are all legitimate reasons to choose a plant. In early Florida, plants often had to do several jobs at once. They could feed people, make shelter possible, provide fiber, carry cultural meaning, tolerate difficult conditions, and support the household economy.
Coontie: the native plant that was once food
Coontie is now familiar as a durable native landscape plant and the host plant for the Atala butterfly. Its deeper history is harder to see. Coontie contains substantial starch in its roots and stems, but it also contains cycasin, a toxin that must be removed through careful processing. Indigenous communities in south Florida developed techniques to make the starch usable as food. Later, settlers commercialized the same process as “Florida arrowroot,” harvesting coontie faster than its slow-growing populations could recover.4
That makes coontie more than a good native substitute for a low-maintenance mass planting. It is a plant that carries a history of food knowledge, extraction, loss, and recovery. Today, homeowners plant it for its texture and for Atala butterflies. In an earlier Florida, it was part of the food system.
Cabbage palms and palm hearts
Cabbage palms are so common in Florida that they are nearly invisible. They frame hotel entrances, line roadways, fill parking-lot islands, and appear in developments meant to signal “Florida” before someone has even reached the front door.
Historically, the cabbage palm was a working plant. Its tender terminal bud, known as swamp cabbage or palm heart, was eaten. Its fronds could be used as thatch. Fibers from the leaves and stems could be made into rope, baskets, and other household materials. Trunks and split stems could become poles or flooring in traditional structures.5
That is the tradeoff hidden inside the phrase “palm heart.” Harvesting the edible bud kills that individual palm because it removes the growing point. Early use made sense in a landscape where the plant was abundant and useful. Modern landscape value, preservation rules, and the time required to grow a mature palm change the decision. The principle remains: every landscape choice has a cost, even when the cost is not visible in the finished view.
Yaupon: the hedge that used to be Florida’s caffeine plant
Yaupon holly is another plant people pass every day without much thought. It may be clipped into a hedge at a shopping center, planted near a parking lot, or trained into a small tree at an HOA entrance. Its leaves contain caffeine. Yaupon is the only plant native to the Southeast known to do so.
Indigenous peoples across the region brewed yaupon in cultural and diplomatic settings. Florida historical sources note that the Apalachee, Creek, Seminole, and Muskogee associated the beverage with peace and purity; Spanish writers used variations of the Timucua-derived term cassina or cacina for it.6
The point is not that every hedge should become tea. It is that a common shrub can carry a history completely different from its modern commercial use. The hedge outside a grocery store may be the descendant of Florida’s native caffeine plant.
Gardens, oranges, and useful ground
Gardens were infrastructure too. Maize, beans, squash, fruit trees, greens, herbs, and other crops made a household less dependent on a single season or a single source of food. In north Florida, Apalachee agriculture was heavily centered on maize, supported by other crops and the larger food landscape of hunting, fishing, and gathering.7
Citrus had already entered Florida by the eighteenth century, but it was not yet the industrial symbol it would later become. Spanish explorers introduced citrus near St. Augustine in the 1500s; by Bartram’s journey through East Florida, orange trees were a recurring part of the St. Johns landscape. He described them in groves and around old planting ground, not as a logo or a roadside attraction, but as a useful crop in the right place.8
We Have Better Tools, Not Different Fundamentals
It would be foolish to romanticize 1776. Earlier Floridians faced heat, mosquitoes, hurricanes, flooding, disease, difficult travel, food insecurity, and brutal systems of colonial control and forced labor. Modern Florida has tools they did not: engineered drainage, pumps, culverts, irrigation, improved plant production, construction equipment, shade structures, soil amendments, better materials, weather data, and decades of horticultural research.
Those tools matter. They make outdoor spaces more comfortable, more productive, and more predictable. They allow us to create patios where there was once mud, move excess water away from a home, support high-value plants through establishment, and give a family more usable hours outside.
But technology does not repeal the site. Irrigation can supplement rainfall, but it cannot make a thirsty plant a logical choice for every dry, sandy lot. Drainage can redirect water, but it does not make water disappear; it moves it somewhere else and adds pipes, grades, outfalls, and maintenance requirements. Fill can change elevation, but it also changes runoff paths, root zones, and relationships with neighboring lots. Hardscape creates durable outdoor living space, but it can also increase heat, speed runoff, and reduce room for roots if it is treated as a surface decision rather than part of a larger system.
This is not an argument against modern intervention. It is an argument against pretending there are no tradeoffs. Florida-Friendly Landscaping principles make the same point in current language: conserve water, manage runoff, protect soil, reduce waste and pollution, provide for wildlife, and choose plants that fit the conditions rather than fighting the conditions forever.9
What 1776 Still Teaches
The useful lesson from early Florida is not that modern yards should look historic. Nobody needs to give up a patio, drainage system, outdoor kitchen, irrigation controller, or shaded place to sit outside. The lesson is more disciplined than that.
Start with the land. Learn where water enters and leaves. Notice the difference between shade and sun, high ground and low ground, sand and organic soil, wind exposure and protected space. Choose plants for the conditions they will actually experience, not only for the photo on the nursery tag. Build outdoor structures and hardscape around the use of the space, while leaving room for drainage, roots, maintenance, and future growth.
Florida’s outdoor environments have always been systems of land, water, plants, shelter, movement, and maintenance. The equipment is newer. The responsibilities are not.
The next time you pass a cabbage palm at a hotel entrance, a yaupon hedge by a parking lot, coontie under a live oak, a low swale beside a driveway, or a dark patch of hardwoods standing above flatter ground, look again. These may feel like ordinary Florida details. They are also reminders that this state has always rewarded people who understand what a site is asking for before they decide what to put on it.
Before Florida had lawns, its outdoor spaces were organized around necessity. The fundamentals are still the same.
