Pennate Plant & Landscape Vocabulary

A shared language for plants, site conditions, landscape design, installation, property constraints, and long-term performance in Florida.

Terms such as full sun, drought tolerant, low maintenance, mature size, and well-drained soil are often used inconsistently. The same is true of design, construction, engineering, and property terms that influence what can responsibly be planted or built.

Pennate publishes this vocabulary so plant profiles, guides, design documents, recommendations, and future digital tools use the same definitions. These terms are written for Florida conditions and translated into practical language without removing the distinctions that matter.

How to Use This Page

A Reference, Not a Test

When a Pennate plant profile, design, guide, schedule, or recommendation uses one of these terms, it refers to the definitions on this page unless the document states otherwise.

  • Definitions assume Florida light, heat, rainfall, soils, and growing conditions.
  • Local exposure and microclimate may matter more than a broad regional label.
  • Ratings describe expected performance, not an absolute guarantee.
  • Project-specific notes override general vocabulary where the two differ.

Interpretation Standard

Conditions Work Together

No plant characteristic should be interpreted in isolation. Sun, moisture, soil, irrigation, mature size, maintenance, salt, wind, and installation quality interact.

A plant may tolerate one difficult condition and still fail because of another. “Drought tolerant,” for example, does not automatically mean tolerant of poor drainage, reflected heat, saltwater intrusion, or neglect during establishment.

Site Conditions

Light, Exposure, and Climate

Pennate light ratings consider direct-sun duration, time of day, reflected heat, canopy, and seasonal variation. A bright location is not necessarily a sunny location.

Full sun
Six or more hours of direct sun on a typical clear day. Afternoon sun is generally more intense than the same duration of early-morning sun.
Part sun
Approximately four to six hours of direct sun. The term usually emphasizes that a plant benefits from receiving a meaningful period of direct light.
Part shade
Approximately two to four hours of direct sun, or a longer period of bright filtered light. The term emphasizes protection from prolonged or intense exposure.
Full shade
Less than approximately two hours of direct sun. Full shade does not mean darkness; many shade plants still require bright indirect light.
Dappled or filtered light
Sunlight broken into moving patches by an open canopy, pergola, screen, or similar overhead obstruction.
Reflected heat
Additional heat radiated or reflected from walls, pavement, glass, roofs, pools, gravel, or other surfaces. It can make a site behave hotter and drier than its sun-hour count suggests.
Microclimate
A localized set of conditions that differs from the surrounding property because of buildings, canopy, wind protection, elevation, pavement, water, or other site features.
Frost pocket
A low or sheltered area where cold air settles, creating greater freeze risk than nearby higher or more open areas.
Hardiness zone
A regional classification based primarily on average annual extreme minimum temperature. It helps estimate cold risk but does not account for heat, humidity, soil, drainage, salt, or microclimate.
Cold hardiness
A plant’s ability to survive low temperatures. Survival does not necessarily mean the foliage, flowers, or stems will remain undamaged.
Frost tolerant
Able to tolerate brief frost or light freezing conditions with limited injury. This is not the same as tolerating a prolonged hard freeze.
Heat tolerant
Able to remain functional and reasonably attractive during prolonged high temperatures when other basic site needs are met.

Moisture Management

Water, Irrigation, and Establishment

Pennate separates a plant’s preferred moisture conditions from its ability to survive temporary drought. Newly installed plants also require different care than established plants.

Water Need

Low water need
Once established, the plant performs with relatively infrequent supplemental irrigation in a suitable site.
Moderate water need
Performs best with regular moisture but does not require the soil to remain continuously wet.
High water need
Requires dependable moisture and may decline when the root zone repeatedly dries.
Consistently moist
Soil remains damp enough to support steady growth but is not continuously saturated or deprived of oxygen.

Drought Tolerance

Poor drought tolerance
Declines rapidly when regular moisture is unavailable. Wilting, leaf loss, burn, dieback, or permanent injury may occur quickly.
Moderate drought tolerance
Tolerates short dry periods but may show visible stress or reduced flowering.
Good drought tolerance
Handles extended dry intervals after establishment, although occasional irrigation may be needed to maintain appearance.
Excellent drought tolerance
Adapted to deliberately dry conditions once established and correctly placed.

Establishment and Irrigation

Establishment period
The period after planting during which roots expand beyond the original container or root ball. Water needs are normally higher and more frequent during this stage.
Established plant
A plant with sufficient new root growth to access moisture from the surrounding soil rather than relying primarily on the original root ball.
Supplemental irrigation
Water applied in addition to natural rainfall to support establishment, seasonal stress, or a plant’s normal needs.
Root zone
The volume of soil occupied or expected to be occupied by active roots. It typically extends beyond the visible canopy or original planting hole.
Hydrozone
A planting area grouped by similar water needs so irrigation can be applied efficiently and without routinely overwatering or underwatering part of the zone.
Overwatering
Applying water too frequently or maintaining saturated conditions long enough to reduce root-zone oxygen, weaken roots, or promote disease.
Coverage
The extent to which an irrigation system applies water across the intended area. Visible spray does not guarantee uniform coverage.
Xeric planting
Planting designed around low supplemental-water demand, appropriate species, suitable soils, and efficient establishment—not simply a landscape containing rocks or succulents.

Below the Surface

Soil, Drainage, and Grading

Florida planting sites may contain native sand, imported fill, construction debris, shell, limestone, muck, organic soil, or mixtures of several materials. Soil performance cannot be assumed from appearance alone.

Soil texture
The relative proportion of sand, silt, and clay particles in soil. Texture influences drainage, water storage, aeration, and nutrient retention.
Sandy soil
Soil dominated by large mineral particles. It usually drains rapidly and stores less water and nutrients than finer-textured soil.
Loam
A balanced soil texture containing useful proportions of sand, silt, and clay. The term describes texture, not automatically fertility or drainage quality.
Clay soil
Fine-textured soil that can hold substantial water and nutrients but may drain slowly, compact easily, or become difficult to work.
Organic matter
Decomposed or decomposing plant and animal material that influences soil structure, moisture retention, biological activity, and nutrient cycling.
Compaction
Compression of soil that reduces pore space, water movement, gas exchange, and root penetration.
Well-drained
Water moves through the root zone at a rate that prevents prolonged saturation while still allowing roots access to moisture.
Moist soil
Soil that remains regularly damp but is not continuously saturated.
Seasonally wet
A site that becomes saturated or holds water during predictable parts of the year but may dry substantially during other periods.
Periodic inundation
Temporary flooding or standing water that occurs after storms, high water, or seasonal rainfall and later recedes.
Standing-water tolerance
The ability to survive recurring periods of flooded or saturated soil. Tolerance varies with water depth, duration, temperature, and water quality.
Infiltration
The movement of water from the soil surface into the soil.
Percolation
The downward movement of water through soil after it has entered the surface.
Grade
The elevation and shape of the ground surface. Grade determines where water flows, collects, or leaves a site.
Slope
The rate of elevation change across a horizontal distance, commonly described as a percentage or ratio.
Positive drainage
Surface grading that directs water away from structures and toward an appropriate discharge, storage, or infiltration area.
Swale
A shallow, elongated depression that conveys, slows, stores, or infiltrates runoff.
Berm
A constructed mound or raised landform used for screening, directing water, changing elevation, or creating planting relief.
Soil pH
A measure of soil acidity or alkalinity. Pennate generally describes soil below about 6.0 as acidic, 6.0–6.5 as slightly acidic, 6.5–7.5 as near neutral, and above about 7.5 as alkaline.
Chlorosis
Yellowing caused by reduced chlorophyll. It may result from nutrient deficiency, high pH, damaged roots, overwatering, disease, or other stress.

Naming and Classification

Plant Identity, Origin, and Life Cycle

Common names are useful for communication, but botanical names and origin classifications prevent ambiguity.

Common name
A familiar or trade name used for a plant. The same common name may refer to different species in different regions.
Botanical name
A standardized scientific name, normally consisting of genus and species, used to identify a plant more precisely.
Genus
A group of closely related species. It is the first part of a botanical name and is capitalized.
Species
The second part of a botanical name, identifying a particular biological species within a genus.
Cultivar
A cultivated selection maintained for particular characteristics. Cultivar names are generally written in single quotation marks.
Hybrid
A plant produced from crosses between genetically distinct parents, sometimes indicated by the multiplication symbol in its botanical name.
Native plant
A plant occurring naturally in the referenced region without recent human introduction. “Native” should always be interpreted relative to a stated geographic area.
Florida native
Native to at least part of Florida. It does not automatically mean suitable for every Florida region, soil, exposure, or developed site.
Endemic
Native to and naturally restricted to a defined geographic area.
Non-native
Introduced outside its natural geographic range. Non-native does not automatically mean invasive.
Naturalized
A non-native plant that reproduces and persists without continued cultivation.
Invasive
A non-native organism that spreads into natural or managed systems and causes or is likely to cause ecological, economic, or other harm. Regulatory and assessment status should be verified separately.
Annual
A plant completing its life cycle within one growing season. Florida annuals may be grown during warm or cool seasons.
Biennial
A plant normally completing its life cycle over two growing seasons.
Perennial
A plant living for more than two years, although aboveground growth may decline or disappear seasonally.
Evergreen
Retains functional foliage throughout the year, although individual leaves are still shed and replaced.
Deciduous
Loses most or all foliage during a predictable dormant or stress period.
Semi-deciduous
Loses a substantial portion of foliage under certain seasonal or stress conditions but may not become completely bare.
Dormancy
A period of greatly reduced visible growth. Dormant plants may still be alive and physiologically active belowground.

Spatial Behavior

Plant Types, Growth Habit, Size, and Spacing

These terms describe how plants occupy space at installation and as they mature.

Plant Types

Tree
A woody plant generally developing one dominant trunk or a defined tree-form canopy.
Shrub
A woody plant commonly developing multiple stems from or near the base and remaining smaller than a typical tree.
Palm
A member of the palm family, typically producing one or more trunks or stems topped by a crown of fronds.
Palm-like plant
A plant resembling a palm in landscape appearance but belonging to another botanical group, such as cycads or certain arborescent monocots.
Herbaceous perennial
A perennial plant without persistent woody stems aboveground.
Groundcover
A low-growing plant used to cover soil, define an edge, suppress weeds, or replace turf in suitable conditions.
Vine or climber
A plant that climbs, trails, twines, attaches, or sprawls and may require support or containment.
Ornamental grass
A grass used primarily for form, texture, movement, or seasonal effect rather than turf.
Sedge or rush
Grass-like plants belonging to botanical groups other than true grasses, often used in moist, naturalistic, or textural planting.
Fern
A non-flowering vascular plant reproducing through spores rather than flowers and seeds.
Bromeliad
A member of the bromeliad family, often forming a rosette and growing terrestrially or as an epiphyte.
Succulent
A plant with thickened tissues adapted to store water.
Epiphyte
A plant growing on another plant for physical support without functioning as a parasite.

Growth Habit

Upright
Growth is predominantly vertical, often making the plant useful in narrower spaces.
Columnar
Tall and comparatively narrow, with a strong vertical outline.
Spreading
Grows outward substantially and may become wider than tall.
Clumping
Expands as a defined cluster rather than through long, aggressive runners.
Running
Spreads through stolons, rhizomes, roots, or stems that extend away from the original crown.
Suckering
Produces new shoots from roots, underground stems, or the plant base, potentially forming a colony.
Arching
Stems or foliage rise and then curve outward or downward.
Weeping
Branches, stems, or foliage hang downward in a pendulous form.
Mat-forming
Develops a dense, low layer close to the soil surface.

Size and Nursery Stock

Installation size
The approximate size of a plant when installed. It should not be confused with mature size.
Mature size
The expected height and spread after establishment under the stated conditions and maintenance regime.
Container size
A nursery production category describing the container or root-ball class. It is not a guarantee of exact plant height or fullness.
Caliper
Trunk diameter measured at a standardized point, commonly used to describe nursery trees.
DBH
Diameter at breast height, generally used when inventorying or describing established trees rather than nursery stock.
Clear trunk
The vertical distance from the ground or root flare to the lowest persistent frond, branch, or canopy point, depending on the plant and specification.
Root ball
The root mass and surrounding growing medium moved with a plant during transplanting.
Root flare
The area where the trunk broadens and major structural roots begin. It should normally remain visible rather than being deeply buried.
On-center spacing
The measured distance from the center of one plant to the center of the next.
Clearance
Deliberate open space maintained between a plant and a structure, walkway, utility, sightline, or neighboring plant.
Transplant shock
Temporary stress following relocation or installation while roots, water balance, and foliage adjust to the new site.

Long-Term Performance

Maintenance, Resilience, and Tolerance

Maintenance ratings describe the effort normally required to keep a plant safe, functional, and visually appropriate in its intended role.

Low

Infrequent pruning, limited cleanup, and relatively few recurring interventions when correctly placed.

Moderate

Periodic pruning, cleanup, seasonal care, or monitoring expected during a typical year.

High

Frequent shaping, cleanup, pest monitoring, replacement, division, or other recurring attention.

Selective pruning
Removing individual branches, stems, or fronds to improve structure, clearance, health, or appearance while retaining the plant’s natural form.
Shearing
Cutting many shoots to a common surface or outline, usually to maintain a formal hedge or geometric shape.
Rejuvenation pruning
Substantial removal of older growth to stimulate renewal. Not every species tolerates this treatment.
Deadheading
Removing spent flowers to improve appearance, reduce seed formation, or encourage additional bloom.
Self-cleaning
Naturally sheds spent flowers, foliage, fronds, or other parts without regular manual removal. The shed material may still require cleanup.
Litter
Leaves, fruit, seedpods, bark, flowers, fronds, or branches shed by a plant.
Pest resistance
A relative tendency to experience less damaging pest activity under ordinary conditions. It does not mean immune.
Disease resistance
A relative ability to avoid or limit disease damage under expected site and care conditions.
Wind tolerance
Relative ability to resist uprooting, trunk failure, branch loss, or severe canopy damage. Performance depends on species, rooting, pruning, soil saturation, exposure, and storm intensity.
Salt-spray tolerance
Ability to tolerate airborne salt deposited on foliage and stems.
Soil-salinity tolerance
Ability to tolerate elevated soluble salts in the root zone. It is different from tolerance of occasional coastal spray.
Flood tolerance
Relative ability to survive saturated soil or inundation for a specified frequency and duration.
Pet or child concern
A plant characteristic that may require caution because of toxicity, thorns, irritating sap, sharp foliage, allergenic pollen, attractive fruit, or similar exposure.

Composition and Experience

Landscape Design Vocabulary

Design terms describe relationships between plants, structures, open space, circulation, views, and human experience.

Canopy
The upper foliage layer created by trees, palms, or other tall plants.
Midstory
The intermediate layer between canopy and low planting, commonly formed by small trees, palms, and shrubs.
Understory
Plants growing beneath or within the influence of a higher canopy.
Ground layer
The lowest planted layer, including groundcovers, low perennials, leaf litter, and other near-surface vegetation.
Specimen plant
A plant selected to stand out because of its form, scale, age, character, rarity, or visual importance.
Accent
A plant or element used to create emphasis without necessarily becoming the dominant feature of the entire composition.
Focal point
A deliberately emphasized destination for the eye.
Massing
Grouping plants or materials so they read as a coherent visual body rather than isolated objects.
Repetition
Reusing a plant, form, color, material, or spacing pattern to create consistency.
Rhythm
A visual sequence created through repetition, spacing, progression, or alternating elements.
Hierarchy
The intentional ranking of visual importance among landscape elements.
Scale
The size of an element relative to people, buildings, the property, and surrounding features.
Proportion
The dimensional relationship between parts of a composition.
Form
The three-dimensional shape and growth outline of a plant or landscape element.
Texture
The perceived visual or physical fineness, coarseness, density, or surface character of foliage and materials.
Balance
The distribution of visual weight across a composition. Balance may be symmetrical or asymmetrical.
Screening
Using plants or structures to block or substantially reduce a view.
Buffering
Reducing visual, acoustic, environmental, or spatial conflict without necessarily creating complete concealment.
Enclosure
The sense of being spatially contained by planting, structures, canopy, landform, or walls.
Transparency
The degree to which views, light, and visual connection remain possible through a planted or constructed layer.
Sightline
A view corridor between an observer and a destination, feature, roadway, entrance, or potential obstruction.
Circulation
The movement of people, vehicles, equipment, water, or animals through a property.
Edge
The boundary between two landscape conditions, such as planting and lawn, private and public space, or paving and soil.
Transition
A deliberate change between spaces, materials, planting layers, forms, or levels of enclosure.
Negative space
Deliberately open or visually quiet space that allows other elements to function and remain legible.
Seasonal interest
Visual or ecological value that changes through flowering, fruit, foliage, dormancy, color, texture, or wildlife activity.

Built Systems

Construction, Irrigation, and Engineering Vocabulary

These definitions support communication but do not replace project specifications, engineering documents, codes, manufacturer instructions, or licensed professional judgment.

Softscape
Living or biologically active landscape components, including plants, soil, mulch, and turf.
Hardscape
Nonliving constructed landscape elements such as paving, walls, steps, decks, edging, structures, and site furnishings.
Subgrade
The prepared soil surface beneath pavement, base material, walls, or other construction.
Base material
Compacted aggregate or other material installed between subgrade and a finished surface to distribute loads and provide support.
Geotextile
A permeable synthetic fabric used for separation, filtration, reinforcement, protection, or drainage.
Catch basin or inlet
A structure that receives surface water and transfers it into a drainage system.
Invert elevation
The elevation of the inside bottom of a pipe, channel, or drainage structure at a defined location.
Outfall
The point where collected water leaves a drainage system.
Retention
Stormwater storage designed to retain water for infiltration, treatment, or another specified function rather than quickly releasing the entire volume.
Detention
Temporary stormwater storage that releases water at a controlled rate after a storm.
Irrigation zone
A group of irrigation devices controlled together by one valve.
Head-to-head coverage
Sprinkler spacing in which one sprinkler throws water to the location of an adjacent sprinkler to improve distribution uniformity.
Precipitation rate
The rate at which an irrigation system applies water to an area, commonly expressed as depth over time.
Emitter
A device that applies water at a controlled point or along a defined line, commonly within drip or microirrigation systems.
Mainline
Pressurized irrigation piping that supplies water to control valves or other major system components.
Lateral line
Irrigation piping downstream of a control valve that supplies heads or emitters within a zone.
Sleeve
A protective conduit installed beneath pavement or structures so irrigation, drainage, electrical, or other lines can pass through.
Field verification
Confirmation of dimensions, elevations, quantities, locations, or existing conditions at the project site before relying on them for construction or purchasing.
As-built record
Documentation showing installed conditions based on available field information. Accuracy and legal status depend on who prepared it and the governing project requirements.

Ownership and Constraints

Property, Survey, and Real-Estate Vocabulary

These terms often affect where planting, irrigation, walls, fences, and other improvements may be placed. Definitions and requirements can vary by jurisdiction and governing document.

Property line
The legally described boundary of a parcel. A fence, hedge, curb, or mowing line should not be assumed to mark the legal boundary.
Survey
A professional representation of parcel boundaries, improvements, easements, and other measured conditions prepared for a defined purpose.
Plat
A recorded map showing the subdivision of land into lots, tracts, streets, easements, and related features.
Easement
A legal right allowing a defined use of land by someone other than the property owner. Ownership and use restrictions depend on the recorded instrument.
Utility easement
An easement reserved for installation, access, maintenance, repair, or replacement of utility systems.
Drainage easement
An area reserved for drainage flow, storage, access, or maintenance. Planting or structures may be restricted.
Right-of-way
Land reserved or controlled for roads, sidewalks, utilities, drainage, public access, or related purposes.
Setback
A required minimum distance between a property boundary or regulated feature and a building, structure, improvement, or other specified use.
Sight triangle
An area near an intersection, driveway, or access point that must remain sufficiently open to preserve visibility.
Encroachment
An improvement, plant, structure, or use extending onto land or into an easement, setback, or right controlled by another party.
Impervious surface
A surface that substantially limits water infiltration, such as a roof, conventional pavement, or certain compacted materials.
Common area
Property owned or controlled collectively by an association, community, condominium, or other entity rather than by one individual lot owner.
HOA restriction
A requirement created by applicable community declarations, rules, standards, or approval procedures. HOA approval does not replace permits or governmental requirements.
Septic drainfield
The subsurface area where treated wastewater is dispersed into soil. Deep roots, grading, compaction, structures, and irrigation may interfere with its operation.
Flood zone
A mapped flood-risk classification used for insurance, regulation, planning, or other purposes. It does not predict the precise behavior of water on every individual property.

Living Systems

Ecology, Wildlife, and Plant-Community Value

Wildlife value is not a single score. Food, shelter, reproduction, seasonality, plant diversity, and surrounding habitat all matter.

Nectar source
Provides floral nectar used by insects, birds, or other wildlife.
Larval host plant
A plant eaten or otherwise required by the immature stage of a particular butterfly, moth, or other insect.
Bird food
Produces fruit, seed, nectar, or associated insect activity used by birds.
Bird cover
Provides shelter, nesting opportunity, concealment, or protection through plant structure and density.
Pollinator
An animal that transfers pollen between flowers while feeding or moving through the landscape.
Biodiversity
The variety of living organisms, genetic material, ecological roles, and communities within a defined area.
Monoculture
A planting dominated by one species, cultivar, or narrow genetic group.
Plant community
A group of plants occurring or intentionally assembled together in response to shared environmental conditions and ecological relationships.
Habitat value
The combined ability of a site or planting to provide food, water, cover, reproduction, movement, and other ecological functions.
Wildlife corridor
A connected route that helps wildlife move between habitat areas.
Ecological function
A process supported by the landscape, such as infiltration, stabilization, cooling, carbon storage, nutrient cycling, food production, or habitat creation.
Keystone species
A species with ecological influence that is disproportionately large relative to its abundance.

Pennate Deliverables

Design, Recommendation, and Document Language

These terms explain the level of certainty and intended use of Pennate documents.

Concept
A proposed direction communicating intent, relationships, and major decisions without representing every construction or field condition.
Planting plan
A drawing or coordinated document indicating proposed plant types, locations, quantities, spacing, and related planting information at the stated level of precision.
Illustrative view
A visual representation intended to communicate character, layering, or design intent. It is not a photographic prediction or exact construction document.
Design intent
The underlying purpose and relationships that should remain intact even when field adjustments or substitutions are necessary.
Approximate quantity
A planning quantity derived from available information that must be confirmed before ordering or installation.
Suggested size
A recommended starting plant size intended to support the design, budget, availability, and establishment goals. It is not a nursery inventory guarantee.
Substitution
Replacement of a specified plant or material with another option. A responsible substitution should preserve the relevant role, mature size, environmental fit, form, maintenance, and design intent.
Assumption
A condition treated as true for purposes of the work because direct confirmation was unavailable or outside scope.
Known constraint
A documented condition limiting the available design, installation, maintenance, access, budget, or technical options.
Risk note
A documented uncertainty or condition that may affect performance, cost, constructability, maintenance, or implementation.
Field adjustment
A minor change made during installation to respond to verified site conditions while preserving the design intent.
Specification
A written requirement describing materials, products, execution, quality, performance, or other project criteria.
Construction document
A drawing, specification, or coordinated document prepared for permitting, pricing, construction, or contractual execution at a stated professional level. A conceptual design is not automatically a construction document.
Verify before purchase
Confirm dimensions, quantities, availability, field conditions, and compatibility before committing funds or beginning installation.

Why This Exists

One Vocabulary Across the Pennate System

Plant information becomes less useful when the same term changes meaning from one page, designer, nursery, contractor, or software tool to the next.

Pennate publishes this vocabulary so the Plant Library, Learning Center, design documents, recommendations, future Studio tools, and structured data can speak the same language.

Definitions may be refined as Pennate adds plant records, research, diagrams, field observations, and installation outcomes. Project-specific requirements, laws, codes, recorded documents, and professional standards take precedence where applicable.
